AbstractAquaporin, a transmembrane protein, has attracted attention globally since its serendipitous discovery by Peter Agre in 1992 (Agre 2006). Its facilitation in rapid and selective water transport has inspired many scientists to utilize this unique function for water treatment applications (Kaufman et al. 2010; Wang et al. 2012). Much effort has been devoted to build and overcome the challenges faced in fabricating the synthetic biomimetic membrane housing the water channel (Kumar et al. 2012). It is envisioned that this technology will bring about higher efficiency for desalination (Kaufman and Freger 2011) and hence lower cost.
