Thin-film-based magnetoelectric heterostructures are currently of great interest and importance due to their intriguing interfacial engineering and novel functional devices building. In this article, an overview of the state of the art in thin-film-based magnetoelectric heterostructures is presented. We initially mention four types of coupling mechanisms and then introduce commonly used methods for fabricating thin-film-based magnetoelectric heterostructures. Different characterization techniques are also demonstrated and finally applications based on thin-film magnetoelectric heterostructures are reviewed including magnetoelectric magnetic sensors, magnetoelectric random access memories, magnetoelectric antennas and magnetoelectric microwave devices. Finally, some future perspectives in this field are provided.Citation
