    Abstract
Secondary bonding of cured carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates using structural adhesives has attracted great attention from the aerospace industry. The most important process step to achieve reliable joints is the execution of a proper surface pre-treatment. In this paper, pulsed CO2 laser irradiation was employed to increase the mode I fracture toughness of CFRP adhesive joints. In order to evaluate the effect of laser irradiation on CFRPs, surface chemistry and morphology were assessed through XPS and SEM analyses. The mode I fracture toughness was determined using the DCB specimen and fracture surfaces were surveyed using optical and SEM.
