Regular records from the gardens and golf course during winter months. Records indicate it is mainly a winter visitor. Most common on vines near Building 16. Male pictured. Female duller & lacking long tail.
Abundant. An invasive species that is now resident. Nests in palm and in air vents on sides of houses which they have learned to open and close. Destructive raiding other birds’ nests killing fledglings and eating eggs. Originally from India.
Breeds in mangrove areas and is frequently heard calling loudly. Large, robust and noisy. Common but shy and often well hidden. At dawn they often call from the top of mangrove stands. Longer billed than Great Reed Warbler. When seen well only has only 4-5 primary tips showing.A mangrove specialist.
Singles or pairs occur along the water edge near mangroves or at the beach. There are two colour morphs found here. The rufous form seems to be resident and found only in mangroves. The usual ‘blue-grey’ form is more widespread and includes migrant birds.
Breeds here. May occur on any deserted patch of land or gravel. Flocks of up to 170 in the mangroves. Birds often shriek to call attention to themselves, probably hoping to distract people away from nest sites, which are usually just scrapes in the sand or gravel. Can mock dive in defence of nests.
Ospreys have been present in KAUST since the opening. They are frequently seen around the beach area, often sitting on lamp posts or fishing offshore. Has bred at the Beacon but most KAUST birds breed on off shore islands. A fish eater.
