A measurement-based fault detection approach applied to monitor robots swarm

Khaldi, Belkacem; Harrou, Fouzi; Sun, Ying; Cherif, Foudil (2017 6th International Conference on Systems and Control (ICSC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017-07-10) [Conference Paper]
Swarm robotics requires continuous monitoring to detect abnormal events and to sustain normal operations. Indeed, swarm robotics with one or more faulty robots leads to degradation of performances complying with the target requirements. This paper present an innovative data-driven fault detection method for monitoring robots swarm. The method combines the flexibility of principal component analysis (PCA) models and the greater sensitivity of the exponentially-weighted moving average control chart to incipient changes. We illustrate through simulated data collected from the ARGoS simulator that a significant improvement in fault detection can be obtained by using the proposed methods as compared to the use of the conventional PCA-based methods.

A statistical-based approach for fault detection and diagnosis in a photovoltaic system

Garoudja, Elyes; Harrou, Fouzi; Sun, Ying; Kara, Kamel; Chouder, Aissa; Silvestre, Santiago (2017 6th International Conference on Systems and Control (ICSC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017-07-10) [Conference Paper]
This paper reports a development of a statistical approach for fault detection and diagnosis in a PV system. Specifically, the overarching goal of this work is to early detect and identify faults on the DC side of a PV system (e.g., short-circuit faults; open-circuit faults; and partial shading faults). Towards this end, we apply exponentially-weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart on the residuals obtained from the one-diode model. Such a choice is motivated by the greater sensitivity of EWMA chart to incipient faults and its low-computational cost making it easy to implement in real time. Practical data from a 3.2 KWp photovoltaic plant located within an Algerian research center is used to validate the proposed approach. Results show clearly the efficiency of the developed method in monitoring PV system status.

Nonlinear partial least squares with Hellinger distance for nonlinear process monitoring

Harrou, Fouzi; Madakyaru, Muddu; Sun, Ying (2016 IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (SSCI), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017-02-16) [Conference Paper]
This paper proposes an efficient data-based anomaly detection method that can be used for monitoring nonlinear processes. The proposed method merges advantages of nonlinear projection to latent structures (NLPLS) modeling and those of Hellinger distance (HD) metric to identify abnormal changes in highly correlated multivariate data. Specifically, the HD is used to quantify the dissimilarity between current NLPLS-based residual and reference probability distributions. The performances of the developed anomaly detection using NLPLS-based HD technique is illustrated using simulated plug flow reactor data.

Improved anomaly detection using multi-scale PLS and generalized likelihood ratio test

Madakyaru, Muddu; Harrou, Fouzi; Sun, Ying (2016 IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (SSCI), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017-02-16) [Conference Paper]
Process monitoring has a central role in the process industry to enhance productivity, efficiency, and safety, and to avoid expensive maintenance. In this paper, a statistical approach that exploit the advantages of multiscale PLS models (MSPLS) and those of a generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) test to better detect anomalies is proposed. Specifically, to consider the multivariate and multi-scale nature of process dynamics, a MSPLS algorithm combining PLS and wavelet analysis is used as modeling framework. Then, GLR hypothesis testing is applied using the uncorrelated residuals obtained from MSPLS model to improve the anomaly detection abilities of these latent variable based fault detection methods even further. Applications to a simulated distillation column data are used to evaluate the proposed MSPLS-GLR algorithm.

Visualization and assessment of spatio-temporal covariance properties

Huang, Huang; Sun, Ying (Spatial Statistics, Elsevier BV, 2017-11-23) [Article]
Spatio-temporal covariances are important for describing the spatio-temporal variability of underlying random fields in geostatistical data. For second-order stationary random fields, there exist subclasses of covariance functions that assume a simpler spatio-temporal dependence structure with separability and full symmetry. However, it is challenging to visualize and assess separability and full symmetry from spatio-temporal observations. In this work, we propose a functional data analysis approach that constructs test functions using the cross-covariances from time series observed at each pair of spatial locations. These test functions of temporal lags summarize the properties of separability or symmetry for the given spatial pairs. We use functional boxplots to visualize the functional median and the variability of the test functions, where the extent of departure from zero at all temporal lags indicates the degree of non-separability or asymmetry. We also develop a rank-based nonparametric testing procedure for assessing the significance of the non-separability or asymmetry. Essentially, the proposed methods only require the analysis of temporal covariance functions. Thus, a major advantage over existing approaches is that there is no need to estimate any covariance matrix for selected spatio-temporal lags. The performances of the proposed methods are examined by simulations with various commonly used spatio-temporal covariance models. To illustrate our methods in practical applications, we apply it to real datasets, including weather station data and climate model outputs.

Detecting SYN flood attacks via statistical monitoring charts: A comparative study

Bouyeddou, Benamar; Harrou, Fouzi; Sun, Ying; Kadri, Benamar (2017 5th International Conference on Electrical Engineering - Boumerdes (ICEE-B), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017-12-14) [Conference Paper]
Accurate detection of cyber-attacks plays a central role in safeguarding computer networks and information systems. This paper addresses the problem of detecting SYN flood attacks, which are the most popular Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Here, we compare the detection capacity of three commonly monitoring charts namely, a Shewhart chart, a Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) control chart and exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart, in detecting SYN flood attacks. The comparison study is conducted using the publicly available benchmark datasets: the 1999 DARPA Intrusion Detection Evaluation Datasets.

Online model-based fault detection for grid connected PV systems monitoring

Harrou, Fouzi; Sun, Ying; Saidi, Ahmed (2017 5th International Conference on Electrical Engineering - Boumerdes (ICEE-B), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017-12-14) [Conference Paper]
This paper presents an efficient fault detection approach to monitor the direct current (DC) side of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The key contribution of this work is combining both single diode model (SDM) flexibility and the cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart efficiency to detect incipient faults. In fact, unknown electrical parameters of SDM are firstly identified using an efficient heuristic algorithm, named Artificial Bee Colony algorithm. Then, based on the identified parameters, a simulation model is built and validated using a co-simulation between Matlab/Simulink and PSIM. Next, the peak power (Pmpp) residuals of the entire PV array are generated based on both real measured and simulated Pmpp values. Residuals are used as the input for the CUSUM scheme to detect potential faults. We validate the effectiveness of this approach using practical data from an actual 20 MWp grid-connected PV system located in the province of Adrar, Algeria.

An efficient statistical-based approach for road traffic congestion monitoring

Abdelhafid, Zeroual; Harrou, Fouzi; Sun, Ying (2017 5th International Conference on Electrical Engineering - Boumerdes (ICEE-B), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017-12-14) [Conference Paper]
In this paper, we propose an effective approach which has to detect traffic congestion. The detection strategy is based on the combinational use of piecewise switched linear traffic (PWSL) model with exponentially-weighted moving average (EWMA) chart. PWSL model describes traffic flow dynamics. Then, PWSL residuals are used as the input of EWMA chart to detect traffic congestions. The evaluation results of the developed approach using data from a portion of the I210-W highway in Califorina showed the efficiency of the PWSL-EWMA approach in in detecting traffic congestions.

Self-Organization in Aggregating Robot Swarms: A DW-KNN Topological Approach

Khaldi, Belkacem; Harrou, Fouzi; Cherif, Foudil; Sun, Ying (Biosystems, Elsevier BV, 2018-02-02) [Article]
In certain swarm applications, where the inter-agent distance is not the only factor in the collective behaviours of the swarm, additional properties such as density could have a crucial effect. In this paper, we propose applying a Distance-Weighted K-Nearest Neighbouring (DW-KNN) topology to the behaviour of robot swarms performing self-organized aggregation, in combination with a virtual physics approach to keep the robots together. A distance-weighted function based on a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) interpolation approach, which is used to evaluate the robot density in the swarm, is applied as the key factor for identifying the K-nearest neighbours taken into account when aggregating the robots. The intra virtual physical connectivity among these neighbours is achieved using a virtual viscoelastic-based proximity model. With the ARGoS based-simulator, we model and evaluate the proposed approach, showing various self-organized aggregations performed by a swarm of N foot-bot robots. Also, we compared the aggregation quality of DW-KNN aggregation approach to that of the conventional KNN approach and found better performance.

In this paper, a Distance-Weighted K Nearest Neighboring (DW-KNN) topology is proposed to study self-organized aggregation as an emergent swarming behavior within robot swarms. A virtual physics approach is applied among the proposed neighborhood topology to keep the robots together. A distance-weighted function based on a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) interpolation approach is used as a key factor to identify the K-Nearest neighbors taken into account when aggregating the robots.
